چکیده

Manganese oxidizing bacteria colonizing the titanium surfaces exposed to seawater were characterized by periodically retrieving the coupons over a period of two years. About 20% of the initial colonizers were capable of oxidizing manganese, and the dominant manganese oxidizing bacteria were those belonging to Gram negative Pseudomonas spp. Gram positive, Bacillus spp, were also observed, though in smaller population. Almost 40-60% of the biofilm formers observed during 1 – 5 months were capable of oxidizing manganese. There was a gradual shift in biofilm colonisers from Gram negative to Gram positive bacteria, with Gram positive members increasing in numbers and diversity with time. Sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) capable of growth under anaerobic conditions were also isolated from the biofilms even as early as two days of exposure to seawater. Different species of marine SRBs belonging to the genus Desulfovibrio and Desulfotomaculum were isolated.

Biofouling and biocorrosion in industrial water systems.

Corrosion associated with microorganisms has been recognized for over 50 years and yet the study of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is relatively new. MIC can occur in diverse environments and is not limited to aqueous corrosion under submerged conditions, but also takes place in humid atmospheres. Biofouling of industrial water systems is the phenomenon whereby surfaces in contact...

Influence of Chlorination and Choice of Materials on Fouling in Cooling Water System under Brackish Seawater Conditions

Cooling systems remove heat from components and industrial equipment. Water cooling, employing natural waters, is typically used for cooling large industrial facilities, such as power plants, factories or refineries. Due to moderate temperatures, cooling water cycles are susceptible to biofouling, inorganic fouling and scaling, which may reduce heat transfer and enhance corrosion. Hypochlorite ...

Microbially influenced corrosion as a model system for the study of metal microbe interactions: a unifying electron transfer hypothesis.

The general term biomineralisation refers to biologically induced mineralisation in which an organism modifies its local microenvironment creating conditions such that there is chemical precipitation of mineral phases extracellularly. Most usually this results from an oxidation or reduction carried out by some microbial species, with the formation of a recognised biomineralised product. These r...

CORROSION BEHAVIOR OF BIOACTIVATED TITANIUM DENTAL IMPLANT USING DIFFERENT CHEMICAL METHODS

At the past, damaged tissue was removed from the body of patients. But now tissue regeneration using scaffolds and implants are used to repair the damaged tissue and organs. Besides of the mechanical properties of metallic biomaterials, they suffer from bioinertness. Using some surface treatment techniques, the bioactivity and also corrosion resistance of titanium implants could be improved. In...

An evaluation of carbon steel corrosion under stagnant seawater conditions.

Corrosion of 1020 carbon steel coupons in natural seawater over a 1-year period was more aggressive under strictly anaerobic stagnant conditions than under aerobic stagnant conditions as measured by weight loss and instantaneous corrosion rate (polarization resistance). Under oxygenated conditions, a two-tiered oxide layer of lepidocrocite/goethite formed. The inner layer was extremely tenaciou...
